Railways Restored by Alan C.Butcher 1990/91 Edition
Editor's Notes
On the following pages will be found a guide to the major preserved railways, railway museums and preservation centres in the British Isles, Information for visitors has been set out in tabular form for easy reference, together with a locomotive stocklist for most centres.
Many preservation centres and operating lines provide facilities for other groups and organisationg to restore locomotives and equipment on their premises. It has not been possible to include full details of these groups, but organisations which own locomotives are shown under the centres at which they operate.
In addition a full list of member
societies of the ARPS is given elsewhere. In the case of most operating lines their length is given but there is no guarantee that services are operated over the entire length.
Within the heading to each entry a heading block has been incorporated for easy reference as to what each site offers in the way of passenger service to visitors. These are as follows:
Railways providing a passenger service between two or more stations with public access; eg Mid-Hants Railway.
A railway or preservation site offering a passenger service on a short length of line, on a regular basis, with public access at only one point; eg Lavender Line.
A museum or site that does not offer a passenger service on a regular basis, if at all; eg Science Museum, London. Some sites may however offer rides on miniature railways.
Under the the heading References will be found the details of articles which have appeared in the lan Allan magazine Railway World during the past two years.
The after-effects of deregulation of the bus industry are still resulting in changes and the details given under Access by public transport should be checked beforehand to ensure services shown are still operating.
The editor would be pleased to receive good quality black and white photographs or colour transparencies for consideration for use in future editions of this title.
