Twilight of Steam by Colin Garratt
Twilight of Steam by Colin Garratt
Colin Garratt's first book, Symphony Steam , created something of a sensation when it brought together 150 magnificent colour photographs. mainly of the declining steam engines in the British Isles. As a young writer, photographer and lecturer, Mr. Garratt is widely known for his colour shows and lectures. He has travelled many thousands of miles to obtain his photographs and devoted innumerable hours in his quest for perfection-awaiting the first glimmer of dawn in Germany's Black Forest region or capturing midnight scenes in a remote Cumberland colliery. These are just two of the gems which have been collected, this time on a wider European canvas,of thelast days of steam. For this work, although very much an independent book in its own right, constitutes the first volume of a new and exciting series being undertaken by Colin, entitled "Last Steam Loco-motives of the World".
Here, portrayed graphically, are aspects of steam's final years in Britain, France, West Germany, Austria, Spain and Portugal, combined with an historical description of each locomotive and vivid accounts of the author's own experiences. Thus, it is a culmination of Art, History and even Adventure, not easy things to com-bine, but Colin Garratt's evocative camera work, along with his many travel tales and wide knowledge of locomotives, will place in perspective for all time, the final years of one of man's most exotic creations - the steam engine.
