SOUTHERN
ELECTRICS
A PICTORIAL SURVEY edited by Brian Rayner for the Southern Electric Group
Electric traction has been important as railway motive power since early in the twentieth century. Nowhere in Britain has this been more so than on the lines operated by the Southern Railway and its constituent companies, and later by the Southern Region of British Railways.
This volume provides the first ever comprehensive pictorial coverage of the rolling stock and locomotives used on the S.R. electrified system. Diesel-electric traction is included to complete the story up to the 1970's.
BRYAN RAYNER is the Chairman of the
SOUTHERN ELECTRIC GROUP, of which he is a founder member. The Group was originally established in 1970 to preserve a '2Bil' unit, though this project was abandoned when a 'Bil' was retained for the National Collection. The Group has now preserved a '4Cor' unit, No. 3142, which is being restored as far as is practicable to 1937 running condition.
The Group's activities now cover most Southern
Electric interests as well as preservation. A bimonthly magazine looks at Southern Electric subjects past, present and, sometimes, future. Meetings in London, Brighton and Beckenham, visits to all types of Southern installations and Southern Electric modelling take place regularly, and several times each year. special events are organised.
