This book contains listings of all standard gauge steam locomotives that were built, served and are now preserved or are awaiting restoration within Great Britain. There are also sections on new build and replica projects that have been completed and on imported engines now operating or on view.

Ex-mainline engines have been separated into their former British Railways regions, BR numbers being used where applicable. Locomotives sometimes run with pre-grouping numbers. Ex-WD and industrial engines have been grouped according to manufacturer-their works number is listed along with any current name or number.

Most of these locomotives may be found on the many Heritage lines now operating throughout Britain. Others are static exhibits in museums or public places. Some have qualified for main line running certificates which allow them to operate on Network Rail lines.

Wherever possible the current location (May 2013) of each locomotive is stated.

Bear in mind that this does not infer ownership. Also, engines often appear as guests at other Heritage lines and may not always be on view at their "home" base.

Contact and SatNav details of locations are included on pages 123-128. In a few cases engines are owned by private individuals or companies who do not offer public access. Please respect their wishes.
