London Midland Steam around Carlisle By R H Leslie.
The lines radiating from Carlisle Citadel station were a source of never-ending interest to the railway enthusiast in steam days, for before the grouping of the railways in 1923 no fewer than seven independent companies ran trains under its immense glass roof. Whilst in more recent times there was not the same variety as had existed before, Carlisle was still an area where one could see very many of the numerous locomotive classes of the former L.M.S.R. This volume covers chiefly the years from the early 1950s to the end of steam, and commences with scenes at Citadel station itself; then follow the lines north to Dumfries and to Beattock; then the lines southward to Langwathby and to Shap; the first few miles of the Maryport & Carlisle complete the circuit of the five principal ex-L.M.S.R. routes radiating from the city; finally there are scenes at various of the motive power depots in the district.
