Railway Stations of Britain: A Guide to Seventy Five Important Centres.

In a survey intended to complement his invaluable railway 'Field Guides' to the British Rail network, which provide gazetteers, histories and activity details of all BR's routes, Geoffrey Body now focuses on 75 important centres, not only major junctions and termini but also smaller stations which still have much to recommend them in terms of train operation and historical character.

From Inverness to Plymouth, from Holyhead to Dover, the list covers all regions and encompasses advanced and functional installations custom-built for today's modern railway and those whose heritage and historical significance are being carefully preserved by BR. The result is a wealth of information presented in a clear and concise fashion and supported by national and area maps, station layout plans and photographs.

The book provides a detailed historical background to each location and also a very clear picture of the role of each in today's thriving railway industry where many new developments in motive power, service patterns and station functions and design combine to prove that the 1980s and '90s will come to be regarded as one of the most exciting eras in our railway his-

tory.

Geoffrey Body began his railway career with the LNER and eventually became marketing manager of the WR's West of England Division before moving to Freightliners and then road haulage. He is now a professional transport writer and pub-lisher, and has travelled extensively throughout the BR system to compile this book and his railway 'Field Guides", also published by PSL.
